Environmental Initiatives Report

Environmental Initiatives

A group of 6-10 congregants have been meeting monthly since August to discuss environmental initiatives in the church.  Discussions have included topics such as the ecological efficiency of our building, strategies for increasing awareness and mobilizing action among church members and the greater community, and ways to include ecological consciousness and intentional action into the spiritual life of the church. Some of the tasks undertaken thus far have included:

     Coordination of the ringing of the bells 350 times to increase awareness of the need to reduce our carbon footprint.

     Regular contribution to the newsletter, including tips for people to become more environmentally responsible in their personal lives.

     Introduction of a “green award” for a church member to be recognized for excellent work in helping with the “greening” of the church.

In addition to this group, much has been done, largely through the efforts of Keith Davis, to better insulate the church building in order to increase energy efficiency.  Also, Carrie attended the New England Religious Leaders Summit on Climate Change with some church members/friends as well as attending a retreat in Ghost Ranch independently to learn more about the intersection between spiritual practice and ecological responsibility.
