Meals-on-Wheels Report

Meals-on-Wheels

Our weekend Meals-on-Wheels project, part of the larger ecumenical “Take and Eat” program involving also St. John’s Episcopal Church, St. Patrick’s and most recently the Methodist and Baptist Churches, who will alternate the 1st Sunday of the month, has been cooking on Saturdays and delivering approximately 65-70 meals on the fourth Sunday of each month since Sept. 2005.  Our recipient list includes people referred by Elder services and local churches and a few members specific to our church community.

We are blessed with a talented and dedicated cooking crew who have prepared everything from mounds of mashed potatoes, and multitudes of mini-meatballs, bagged innumerable delicious baked goods and have baked dozens of cookies and bars.  We have served up approximately 900 meals including an extra meal for Monday of the three-day Memorial Day weekend.  We thank Marion Wilkin, who faithfully makes calls each month to assure that we have a work force of at least 6, and Nan Goodell, who monthly rallies our loyal bakers.

We have six delivery routes each month and our faithful delivery drivers,  formerly overseen by Susie Smith and now by Jean Vankin, not only get the meal to the recipient but deliver cheer and companionship, reporting back if they encounter any concerns.

In 2008, more than 20 persons have tied on aprons and donned food service gloves to help cook and/or package and bag the meals ; a dozen more have baked the luscious desserts and twenty or so have lent their time and autos to deliver the meals.  Thank you, thank you all.  Sheila O’Neill, our founder, continues to check in to offer her expertise and support.

The Board of Outreach has provided funding to enable us to buy food.

We will continue our participation in the program for 2009.  We continue to appeal for another person to become “Food Safety” certified to assume a shared leadership role in the monthly organization.  All who would wish to be part of the Meals group are welcome.  Cooking skills NOT required.

An annual kitchen clean-up date is in the works for Feb. and all are invited to lend a hand and some elbow grease.
