To begin with, it was the music. I started coming to First Church in Williamstown because I wanted to work with Ed Lawrence, the Minister of Music. I had been a paid soloist at the Christian Science church, but those services didn’t speak to me at all. A friend convinced me to give the First Church choir a try, and I loved it! Eventually, I joined because the community appealed to me in ways I didn’t expect. There is so much happening here!
As a young girl, growing up in the Catholic Church, it felt like something was missing. The doctrinaire way in which Catholics are taught never quite appealed to me. I wasn’t sure what I needed, but I needed something different. As a singer, I have had the opportunity to sit through many church services; and I never found one that felt real to me until the services at First Church.
At First Church I can contemplate what being christian means to me — not what it means to some other person, telling me what to believe. I get my weekly reminder to live righteously, I am inspired by wonderful music from all parts of the globe, and I feel a part of an active and compassionate community!
