On March 18th five of us from First Church Williamstown (Jina Ford, Jody Green, Sam & Elizabeth Smith, and Lynn Chick) attended Super Saturday, an all-day workshop and gathering sponsored jointly by the Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island Conferences of the UCC. There were over 600 attendees and more than 50 workshops to choose from. What an inspiring and informative day! Keynote speaker was Brian McClaren, author, activist, and public theologian. In addition to the sermon and workshop with Brian McClaren, we attended workshops with church and lay leaders on these topics “Church Ahead: Theology and Spirituality for the Emerging Church;” “Launching Young Leaders;” “What We’ve Learned from Vital Congregations;” “Under Her Wings: Becoming a Sanctuary Church;” “Being a Local Church Moderator: Expectations, Fiduciary Responsibilities, and Blessings;” and “Climate Change 101: The Why and How of Church Engagement;” and “Here I Stand, I Can Do No Other: Resistance, Civil Disobedience, and the Church.”
If you would like to learn more about what happens at Super Saturday, the Massachusetts UCC has put video highlights and Brian McLaren’s keynote speech on their website. Mark your calendar for the next Super Saturday! It will be in Framingham, Massachusetts, on Saturday, October 21st. Keynote speaker will be Rev. Noel Andersen, Grassroots Coordinator with Church World Service out of the Washington DC Advocacy Office.
